Health Care in Mallorca

Spanish hospitals and their Doctors are of a very high standard and you will be amazed at how efficient and clean these hospitals and surgeries are and most hospitals employ English speaking staff to deal with the thousands of British tourists who attend A&E each year.

As an EU national you will be covered for treatments on the Spanish public health care system. Please ensure you have your E111 card or your E 121 card if you intend to live in Spain for longer than 3 months.

The E111 is valid providing you continue to pay social security contributions in the UK. This will cover all emergency treatments except physiotherapy and dental treatment.

If you are going to live in Mallorca, you will need to apply for an official Medical card. You can obtain one of these by visiting the local Spanish social security office. Bring your E111 or your E121, along with your passport and proof of residency.

You will find information regarding the local offices at the Instituto Nacional de la Seguridad Social on www.seg-social.es

On the island there are many local health centers with numerous doctors working in various departments. These establishments are amazing and the service is second to none. If you have any of the stated medical cards this service is free, whilst on the island all the establishments are listed in the local yellow pages.

Many individuals decide to contribute to private medical insurance plans- there are over 6 million Spaniards enrolled in such plans. There are many different schemes and it is worth while discussing such plans with an independent specialist. They will advise you in relation to the scheme that suits you the best. There are many big named companies such as Bupa and PPP who offer schemes.

Should you need to buy any medicine, you will find Spanish chemists a lot cheaper, and if you are a pensioner all prescriptions are free.

Dental treatment as stated earlier is the only part of the health care which has a cost attached. You simply make an appointment and pay the appropriate fee- which again is considerably cheaper than the UK.
