A year ago today I arrived in Majorca to put the detail into our family master plan evolved on a balcony overlooking the Port of Soller the previous summer. A two generational move to Soller from North London was the decision made then.

February 2005 was full of blossom and freezing cold at night and I was staying in our apartment on the beach in the Port of Soller. It took three days to warm the flat to make it comfortable - but I was on a mission and didn't stop too often to consider the weather.( A lesson I am beginning to learn - the weather is the weather and if I am going to live here I should try to stop my English obsession with it).

My mission was to look at schools on behalf of my granddaughter and report back to her parents on my findings and also to look at a house we had happened by the previous summer - just in case it was still available. I chose to accept the challenge when my natural inclination was to go for walks around the bay or down the mountain from Fornalutz or even have some retail therapy in Palma - not to mention the evenings I could spend with friends in excellent restaurants. But no - that's holidaymakers talk and I was preparing to change status...

The house that Trev and I had visited for 5 minutes, the previous summer and dismissed as too big and too expensive now became very interesting. We had spent a lot of time discussing where we wanted to live - Soller or the Port? Country location or in the heart of things? House or Apartment? What size? And also was there anywhere else on the Island that would suit us better than the place we had had our holiday home for the past seven years? Parallel discussions were happening in another corner of North London with Lucy and Robert but for them the school that Kate got into would be a factor in where they lived...
