Cost of Living
When you make the decision to up sticks and move to a new country, one of the most important reasons to make the move will be your new standard of living. The island of Mallorca is slightly more expensive than the Spanish mainland, however if you shop around, you will find it comparable or cheaper than the UK. Driving License
If you are an EU citizen you will be spared the task of having to pass the Spanish driving test. Your driving license is valid on the island and when you decide that you wish to become a resident you will need to have your license stamped by the local authority or exchange it for a Spanish license. Spare a thought for the expat from the USA - they have to take a Spanish driving test!
Education
The education system in Mallorca is fantastic and you will have three types of schools to choose from. Choosing a school for your child can be the most daunting task when you relocate, however the decision rests on the parents who understand the needs of their children. Over 80% of expats register their children at the local state schools, where the education is free and your child will integrate directly with all the local Spanish children, enabling them to become fluent in Catalan and Spanish.

Please ensure you have your E111 card or your E 121 card if you intend to live in Spain for longer than 3 months.

Relocating to Majorca
Relocating is a stressful time and takes a lot of planning. Many people presume that the process is set in stone and nothing can go wrong! Our advice is to sit down and plan well in advance for any relocation plans you may have. It is advisable to visit the area you believe to be the 'perfect spot' and experience the location not only in the beautiful sunny summer months but also in the Winter months. Many individuals visit the Island in the middle of the summer when the sun is high and all the establishments are open. The island has a more laid back approach out of season and sometimes the weather can really change for the worse. Storms around the islands can be fast & furious and not for the faint-hearted!
Residency
Once you have your NIE number and have been resident in the country for a minimum of two years you may wish to apply to become a Citizen of Mallorca. Once your application is approved you will have to swear allegiance to the King and the Spanish Constitution. You will have to renounce Citizenship of your country of origin and then you become a Citizen of Spain.

Nie Numbers
NIE- numero de identidad/ identificacion de extranjero. The immigration department will issue you with an NIE number. This number will be your personal identification number whilst living on the Island. You will use this number to file accounts, start up a business and open Bank accounts. This number also enables you to purchase products such as cars, property etc.
