NIE- numero de identidad/ identificacion de extranjero.

The immigration department will issue you with an NIE number. This number will be your personal identification number whilst living on the Island.

You will use this number to file accounts, start up a business and open Bank accounts. This number also enables you to purchase products such as cars, property etc.

Before you move to the Island you can fill out the application form which you can pick up from any Spanish Embassy in the UK. You can then bring the number with you.

However it is acceptable now to start the ball-rolling in Mallorca- this option is ideal for the individuals who are not 100% sure about taking the big step of moving abroad.

You can show your Passport to a registered organisation who will apply on your behalf for the NIE number. This has become very popular as these organisations are specialists in filling out the stated forms and talk fluent Spanish, therefore enabling the process to run smoothly.

At present the cost is 60 euros and is well worth the investment. The process can take up to 8 weeks, but you will still be able to proceed with all your daily duties and purchases whilst you wait for the NIE number to be issued.
